A study on recognition of nursing by oriental medicine doctors
Lee Hyang-Yeon

Abstract
This descriptive study examined and analyzed the degree of recognition of nursing as a profession by doctors practicing oriental medicine. Data collection was done between June 14 and July 20, 1993. Data were collected form 252 oriental medicine doctors both in university affiliated hospitals and in private practice in the cities of Seoul, Pusan and Iri. The purpose of the study was to analyze the degree that nursing was recognized as a profession by these doctors. The results of the study are as follows : 1. Factor analysis identified six factors : a broad role for nursing, nursing as caregiving, nursing as a sacrificial service, psychological aspect of nursing, negative aspect of profession due to over work and the negative aspect when duty is carried out mechanically. Eigen value for these factors was 1.53 and they accounted for 48.3% of the variance. 2. The highest level of recognition was for the factor nursing as caregiving. 3. When the doctors were grouped according to demographic characteristics and a comparison made of their level of recognition of nursing it was found that university affiliated residents under 29 years of age had lowest level of recognition. 4. When eight demographic variables were examined for their contribution to the variance it was found that the doctor¡¯s age and whether there was nurse among the family members were two significant variables and explained 7.4% of the variance. From the results of this study it can be said that nurses need to help oriental medicine doctors to become aware of nursing as a profession that is autonomous and based on scientific principles. This will lead to an increase in the level of recognition given to nursing by these doctors.
